REPORT: Why The Sixers Want To Hold An Unclaimed Roster Spot Before 2024–2025

After signing Reggie Jackson to a one-year, minimum-salary contract on Tuesday, the Philadelphia 76ers now have 13 players on standard contracts and two open roster spots remaining. They’re planning to fill only one of those two roster spots ahead of the 2024-25 season.

During Paul George’s introductory press conference last Tuesday, team president Daryl Morey explained why.

“We feel great about the players we brought in,” he said. “But as folks in Philly know, I always see that a team evolves during a season. As we see things that are needed to address the team, we have draft picks that we could use. We’re gonna keep an open roster spot so that as we have injuries, or as needs really arise where Coach Nurse sees something we need to do, we’ll address those.”
