After departing from Madrid, Emma Raducanu must update the record.

There are times when the magnificent “old” Emma Raducanu reappears. The 18-year-old who startled the tennis community is currently working on developing into a more capable player. All too frequently, the complete package falls apart to show that the 2021 U.S. Open champion is not up to the long haul of a seven-day or two-week business event. Another example was losing 6-2 6-2 to Maria Lourdes Carle, an Argentine qualifier, in the opening round of the Madrid Open.

“I really enjoy sliding and moving on clay; it’s a lot of fun. Raducanu spoke with the LTA prior to the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers versus France in April, saying, “It’s interesting, I think it’s different.” As expected, she defeated Diane Parry with a performance that was among her best since that pivotal moment at Flushing Meadows.

After a strong showing at the Stuttgart Open, when she upset World No. 31 Linda Noskova and former major champion Angelique Kerber with the loss of just eight games, hopes were further heightened that the British player had found her happiness again. Even though the 21-year-old lost in a first set tie-break, he was impressive against Iga Swiatek. The finest of Raducanu’s powerful and free-swinging play was on display in these moments and matches, something that hasn’t happened often since Leylah Fernandez and the others were destroyed three years ago.
