For Toronto Blue Jays fans, it was a day of mixed fortunes. The bad news was that with a right calf strain, all-star shortstop Bo Bichette was placed retroactively on Saturday on the 10-day injured list. Orelvis Martinez, a highly anticipated talent, was called up. The team’s best hitting prospect is Martinez. In 63 games with Triple-A Buffalo, he has amassed 16 home runs and 28 RBI, demonstrating his impressive power in the minor levels. Martinez is hitting.260 this season, up from the.226 he batted in his first taste of Triple-A last season at Double-A New Hampshire (he hit.263 with 11 home runs in 55 games). He has a special affinity for left-handed pitchers.

Bichette was hitting just.237 this season with four home runs and 28 RBI, and he hasn’t played since Friday.

Brandon Eisert, a left-handed pitcher, has been optioned to Buffalo, the Jays also said.

Prior to Tuesday’s game against Boston, right-hander Ryan Burr was also activated after being brought up from Buffalo.

Martinez barely has 22 years of age. Along with its three 25-year-old regulars (Alejandro Kirk, Davis Schneider, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.), Toronto has just brought up 24-year-old prospect Addison Barger. Daulton Varsho is 26, Bichette is 26. Veteran hitters Justin Turner, George Springer, and Kevin Kiermaier have not fared well for the squad.
