Superstar defender Raphael Varane has signed with Serie A newcomers Como on a free transfer, the team announced on Sunday night. In time for their preseason friendly later today against Saudi Pro League winners Al-Hilal, the 31-year-old will become a member of the new team.

Varane’s transfer to Como was a ‘done deal‘ a week ago, yet the official announcement arrived only on Sunday night.

Como 1907 is thrilled to announce the signing of French defender Raphaël Varane from Manchester United on a two-year deal with an option to extend,” the club’s statement read. “Regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation, Varane won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies during his time at Real Madrid.

The 2018 World Cup winner also helped Manchester United to win their first major trophies in six years, lifting the 2023 Carabao Cup and then the 2024 FA Cup at Wembley Stadium.

Cesc Fabregas has reportedly played a pivotal role in Varane’s decision to turn down lucrative proposals in Saudi Arabia and join Como. The former midfielder refused to hide his excitement for luring one of the best defenders in the 21st century to the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

Raphael is a special player and his signing is proof of the ambition we have for this club,” the Como manager said. “He is highly decorated, and the experience he brings in two of the best leagues in the world can not be underestimated. I can’t wait to start working with him.”
