The Houston Texans are making every effort to surround sensational rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud with an excellent supporting group.

Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs was acquired by Houston earlier in the offseason in a sensational trade with the Buffalo Bills. Additionally, the team acquired Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon through a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals, a division foe.

General manager Nick Caserio doesn’t seem to be finished with training camp.

Houston has signed veteran running back Cam Akers to a one-year deal, according Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

This season in Houston, Akers and Dameon Pierce will probably compete to be Mixon’s backup running back. The former Florida State player, selected in the second round, played his first three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams before joining the Minnesota Vikings in the middle of the last campaign.

In 2020, Akers made a big impression as a rookie with the Rams, accumulating 625 running yards. A summer later, coming into his sophomore season, he sustained a torn Achilles.

In 2022, Akers managed to bounce back, amassing 787 running yards and seven touchdowns. Sadly, after playing in just one game the previous season, he got into head coach Sean McVay’s dog house with the Rams and was dismissed.

Going into the 2024 season, he will now have a chance to compete for touches in a Houston Texans backfield that has unexpectedly become congested.
