DETAILS: Roman Anthony, a Red Sox prospect, lights up late to win the first Future Skills Showcase

Roman Anthony made sure that the highly anticipated Red Sox “Big Three” would make a lasting impression on the baseball world in Texas during All-Star Weekend, with help from colleagues Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel.

Anthony finished last after the first two rounds of the first Futures Skills Showcase, which featured eight prospects competing in a three-round format designed to showcase bat control and power.

Anthony was one of just two players without a point in the opening round, which awarded batters for bunting to exact infield spots or hitting the ball to outfield objectives. He didn’t perform much better in Round 2, where batters had to line the ball to certain outfield thirds. He finished the round with 6 points, an astounding 48 points behind the leader.

Mayer and Teel offered Anthony some consolation as he left the batter’s box—sort of.

To be honest, all I was doing was teasing him. “You have to try to get six points, bro,” I told Mayer. “With it, we were having fun.”

Anthony made small plans.

“He was like, ‘Dude, I’m just trying not to get last place,'” Teel, who finished the All-Star Futures Game with two doubles and a perfect game, said.
