We are looking back at Mike Gorman’s greatest passes of legendary passes made by Larry Bird in observance of his final season.

Here we have the three days of the year when none of our leagues have an official game, the quietest part of the American sports calendar.

Before baseball returns on Thursday, these kinds of times call for a palate cleanser, so allow me to give you the most shockingly vicious dunk of Larry Bird’s career.

The words “bird” and “dunk” are rarely used together because the Boston Celtics Hall of Famer and all-time NBA great is usually characterized by the phrase “can not run, can not jump.” However, Bird was much more athletic than anyone realized, especially in his early career.

For evidence, watch this 1983 hammer on the Rockets, a la Jayson Tatum. Though there is a replay, the video is a little blurry. For the poster, Bird leaps over defenseless defender Wally Walker, drives the paint, and upfakes aging Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes from the left side.

Bird has a striking resemblance to Tatum, the NBA champion who makes use of his entire wingspan when he throws a layup in traffic, with his two large strides and full extension.
