BREAKING NEWS: Kevin Kiermaier, a four-time Gold Glove center fielder for the Toronto Blue Jays, has declared his intention to retire at the end of the current season.

Blue Jays outfielder and four-time Gold Glove winner Kevin Kiermaier said on Wednesday night that he will be retiring at the end of this season.
Kiermaier, who is in his eleventh season, spent nine of those years with the Rays before moving to Toronto. In 77 games this season, he has a batting average of.191, four home runs, and eighteen RBIs. Last winter, he inked a $10.5 million one-year deal with the Blue Jays.
After defeating Tampa Bay 6-3, Kiermaier said, “I’m happy with my decision.” “We’ll see what lies ahead as the season isn’t quite over yet.”
In center field in 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2023, Kiermaier—who was selected by the Rays in the 31st round of the 2010 draft—was awarded Gold Gloves. In addition, he received the 2015 Platinum Glove Award as the American League’s finest defensive player.
John Schneider, manager of the Blue Jays, called him a “true pro.” “He’s been this team’s greatest asset. Arguably, he is among the best center fielders of all time.
The 34-year-old Kiermaier, who has spent his whole home career on artificial grass, has suffered wear and tear from years of making difficult slides and diving catches on the surface.
“Having played on this turf for so many years has worn me down,” Kiermaier said, listing hip and back problems as some of his season’s struggles. It’s become harder than ever to get ready every day.
After retiring from baseball, Kiermaier stated he was excited to devote all of his attention to being a full-time father. He and his wife are expecting their third child in December.
However, if the proper opportunity presents itself, Kiermaier has also indicated interest in a possible part-time coaching position.
