According to coach Matt Peet, the Wigan Warriors are still anticipating a formidable St Helens team despite their recent struggles.

Even though the Wigan Warriors have lost their last two games in the Super League, head coach Matt Peet believes the team still expects the best of rivals St Helens on Friday in their derby match.

The reigning champion Warriors extended their winning streak to nine games across all competitions with their most recent victory over the Castleford Tigers, shocking Paul Wellens’ team with an 8-6 home loss.

Wigan’s triumph over Leigh solidified their place atop the Super League standings, while Saints are now four points adrift after losing to Salford in Round 15.

Both teams will be missing several important players because of injuries, and Saints’ powerful utility Moses Mbye will have to watch from the sidelines despite the team’s best efforts to appeal the match review panel’s ruling during the week. The Cherry and Whites will also be without star hooker Brad O’Neill because of suspension.

With their victory over a 12-man Warriors team on Good Friday at a packed Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens is now ahead 1-0 in 2024.

The two titans of the Super League will also square off one more during Elland Road’s Magic Weekend later in August.

“I believe it’s the most notable league match of the year—at least for us,” Peet went on.

“The games are always, in my opinion, the best to watch of the season, and there’s a lot of respect for Paul Wellens and the organization.”

“It’s not a week where coaches have a lot on their plates, and we’re excited to watch two championship teams battle in a fantastic atmosphere.”
