Birmingham City deal hits stumbling block after training ground visit
Sparta Rotterdam defender Mike Eerdhuijzen was poised to become Blues’ fourth signing of the summer transfer window but the move has hit an unsurpassable stumbling block.
The 23-year-old, a regular starter for Sparta last season as the Dutch outfit finished eighth in Eredivisie, was set to join in a £2.1 million deal. Eerdhuijzen was expected to follow Ryan Allsop, Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Alfie May through the doors at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, however the deal has broken down.
Birmingham Live notes. Eerdhuijzen will not be joining the team, even if a monetary arrangement with Sparta is reached. The Dutchman went to the Blues’ practice on Monday to complete his transfer, but a problem developed and the deal was called off.
New manager Chris Davies is keen on adding another centre-back as he’s likely to use a back-three formation. Club captain Dion Sanderson is the only fully recognised centre-half still at the football club, with defensive midfielder Krystian Bielik a makeshift option.
Emanuel Aiwu didn’t join permanently following his loan from Cremonese and Marc Roberts departed after seven years in Birmingham. Cody Drameh, who sometimes shifted across to the centre of defence, has returned to Leeds United.
