The Vegas Golden Knights re-sign Pavel Dorofeyev and Kaedan Korczak and sign Ilya Samsonov.
The Vegas Golden Knights have found a goaltender to work in tandem with Adin Hill, signing Ilya Samsonov to a one-year deal worth $1.8 million.
The move comes two days after the Golden Knights traded Logan Thompson to the Washington Capitals.
Samsonov, 27, spent the past two seasons on one-year contracts with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He posted a 50-17-13 record with the club during those two years, and even stole a few playoff wins in that span. Most notably, he was the goalie of record when the Leafs ended a 19-year-old stretch without a playoff series victory, beating Tampa Bay in the first round last year.
But injuries and inconsistent plays plagued Samsonov’s tenure, which saw him placed on waivers midway through the 2023-24 season. Samsonov was outplayed by Joseph Woll, who will assume No. 1 duties in Toronto next year while Samsonov looks to revive his career in Sin City.
Meanwhile, the Golden Knights also signed winger Pavel Dorofeyev and defenseman Kaedan Korczak to two-year deals after becoming restricted free agents on Monday.
Dorofeyev, 23, will make $1.835 million per season over the next two years. He played 47 games in his first season without AHL intervention, scoring 13 goals and 24 points as one of the more productive rookies per 60 minutes. He has 20 goals and 33 points in 67 games over three years since coming over from the KHL.
Korczak, 23, split the year equally between the NHL and AHL this past season. He had one goal and nine points in 26 games in both leagues and had one goal and 11 points in 37 games over three years. Korczak’s brother, Ryder, has another year left on his deal with the New York Rangers.
The Anaheim Ducks ink one-year contracts with Brett Leason and Urho Vaakanainen.
The Anaheim Ducks are bringing back two familiar names, signing forward Brett Leason to a one-year, $1.05 million deal, and defenseman Urho Vaakanainen to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.
Leason, 25, is set for his third season with the Ducks after setting a personal best of 11 goals and 22 points last year. Leason has 20 goals and 37 points in 158 games over four years, so perhaps the 2023-24 season was just the start of a breakout for the young, 6-foot-5 winger.
Drafted in the second round by the Washington Capitals as an overage prospect in 2019, Leason is a decent bottom-six scorer who can skate himself into a top-six role when needed. His improvement last year should give the Ducks some hope that he can step into the lineup and do a bit more over the duration of this new deal.
aakanainen, meanwhile, never lived up to expectations after going 18th overall to the Boston Bruins in 2017. He spent four years with the organization, but struggled to maintain a spot in the lineup. He was later moved to Anaheim in 2021-22, where he started to finally establish himself as a more regular NHLer. Last year, he played a career-best 68 games, scoring one goal and 14 points.
According to CapFriendly, the Ducks have $29.655 million in cap space with the only notable RFA being defenseman Jackson LaCombe. The team has been quiet on the free agent front, mostly making minor signings to kick off free agency.
