Given Porzingis’ injury, the Boston Celtics must make acquiring a big man their top priority in free agency.

Concern has been raised by the recent announcement that Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis will miss the beginning of the 2024–25 season due to surgery to repair a dislocated posterior tibialis tendon and torn retinaculum. The Celtics now have a big choice to make: should they focus on acquiring another big man? The Cs are already depleted at the center position and face uncertainty heading into the offseason.

The Celtics have Al Horford returning, albeit at the age of 38, and free agents Luke Kornet and Xavier Tillman as they head into the offseason. The Celtics now have until November or Christmas to decide whether to keep Tillman or Kornet, or seek elsewhere, with Porzingis sidelined.

Given that Kornet and Tillman both made significant contributions this season, there is a compelling argument to be made for the Cs to contract both players.

But given that Tillman will be less expensive, I believe the Celtics will probably only be able to retain one of them. The Celtics will still require a big man even if they decide to let Tillman go. Though others believe Boston can get away with Tatum starting at center or with Al Horford getting more playing time, those are foolish ideas.

The depth the Boston Celtics should offer will help starters last longer.
In order to relieve any further pressure on Jayson Tatum and allow the Cs to rest Horford throughout the season, they should give priority to adding depth at the position. Thinking you’ve had enough is also a significant deal in my opinion because it conveys complacency. One-hit wonders are the ones who believe they have it all figured out after winning a title.
