Rafael Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam champion from Spain, has pulled out of the upcoming Laver Cup due to ongoing fitness concerns. The Laver Cup confirmed this news on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.

In a statement, Nadal expressed his disappointment: “I regret to announce that I won’t be able to participate in the Laver Cup in Berlin next week. As this is a team event, I believe it’s best for Team Europe that I step aside, as others are better positioned to help secure a victory.”

He added, “I have wonderful memories from my past Laver Cup experiences and was eager to join my teammates, especially with it being Bjorn Borg’s final year as captain. I wish Team Europe all the best and will be supporting them from afar.” Nadal’s last competitive outing was at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he was eliminated in the second round by Novak Djokovic, who went on to win the title. Nadal also played doubles alongside fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, but the duo was knocked out in the quarterfinals.
The Laver Cup has yet to announce Nadal’s replacement for Team Europe, which already includes top players like Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Nadal’s 2024 Grand Slam appearances were limited to the French Open, where, despite his 14-time champion status, he was defeated in the first round by Zverev. Nadal has struggled with injuries since the 2023 Australian Open, which caused him to miss most of the 2023 season while he focused on recovery, with hopes of preparing for a final competitive year. In 2024, Nadal competed in only seven tournaments, including the French Open and the Olympics.
