Helmut Marko has shed light on Red Bull’s ongoing efforts to secure Lando Norris’ signature for the long term.

Helmut Marko has revealed that Red Bull held ‘serious discussions’ with Lando Norris over a move to sister team AlphaTauri (now rebranded as VCARB) for the 2019 campaign before McLaren intervened and promoted him into an F1 seat from their driver academy.

Norris was signed to McLaren’s young driver programme back in 2017 and responded by dominating the Formula Three title, scoring an impressive nine race wins in the process. He then followed this up by finishing second in his rookie Formula Two campaign behind George Russell.

Such impressive performances caught the eye of Red Bull. “We had serious discussions and we had a contract ready for Lando Norris for AlphaTauri, or Toro Rosso at that time.,” Marko revealed on the Inside Line F1 podcast. “Unfortunately, they [McLaren] found out. They had two contracts and then one was a clause which stopped this cooperation with Lando Norris.”
