DiJonai Carrington, a standout player for the Connecticut Sun, has condemned an offensive meme involving George Floyd after criticizing Indiana Fever fans following a loss to Caitlin Clark and her team.

Carrington took to X to express her outrage: “Imagine thinking George Floyd’s murder is a joke just because of a basketball game. This is so sick.”

The offensive image in question alters a 2020 photo of Floyd’s murder by replacing the police officer’s face with Clark’s smiling face and Carrington’s headshot over Floyd’s. The meme was created by a paying X subscriber in response to Carrington’s comments about Fever fans: “The Indiana Fever have the nastiest fans in the W. Ew.”

The disturbing meme may have reinforced some negative opinions about Fever fans, with one follower commenting, “Average Indy fan behavior,” and another suggesting, “Just say you hate black women and move on.”

Floyd’s murder remains a contentious topic. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined Floyd died from “cardiopulmonary arrest” due to “law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression,” despite some social media users in 2023 sharing parts of the report to claim he died from a drug overdose. Expert testimony during Derek Chauvin’s 2021 trial confirmed that while Floyd had fentanyl and methamphetamine in his system, drugs were not the cause of his death.
