Brighton & Hove Albion’s summer acquisition Mats Wieffer might already be contemplating a future move, potentially following in the footsteps of Georginio Wijnaldum. Karim El Ahmadi, speaking to Algemeen Dagblad and covered by PSV Fans, suggests Wieffer could be using Brighton as a stepping stone.

Wieffer joined Brighton for €32 million this summer, amid a series of high-profile signings by the Seagulls as they aimed to bolster their squad. His transfer was unexpected, as many in the Netherlands had anticipated he would join a Champions League club. However, Wieffer chose Brighton, seeing it as an ideal place to acclimate to the Premier League.

Historically, many players have taken a similar route, joining clubs like Brighton to establish themselves in England before potentially moving on to more prestigious teams. Georginio Wijnaldum is a notable example of this strategy, having used his time at Newcastle United as a launchpad for a move to top clubs like Liverpool or Tottenham.

El Ahmadi highlighted that while Brighton might not play in European competitions, they have been performing well and could provide Wieffer with a platform to showcase his abilities. He pointed out that players from the Netherlands who make a smaller initial jump often benefit more in the long run compared to those who leap straight to top-tier clubs.

Reflecting on his own experiences, El Ahmadi noted that players who excel in the Netherlands might not be seen as the top performers in England right away. He suggested that Wieffer could use this period at Brighton to prove himself and potentially secure a move to a bigger club later in his career.
