BREAKING NEWS: Norwich City is considering pursuing a Leeds United target as a potential replacement for Jonathan Rowe…

Leeds United’s need for a new winger was only heightened by last night’s dismal 3-0 defeat against Middlesbrough.

Daniel Farke made eight changes to his side for the Carabao Cup tie at Elland Road, two of which came on the wing as Brenden Aaronson and Joe Gelhardt replaced Wilfried Gnonto and Dan James.

Neither Aaronson or Gelhardt are natural wingers and that was certainly reflected in the performance, as Leeds had virtually no width, meaning chances were at a premium.

Leeds had already been in the market for a new winger prior to last night’s match, as the search to replace last season’s Championship POTS Crysencio Summerville continues.

With Georginio Rutter’s £40 million release clause also having been activated by Brighton, the need for attacking reinforcements is becoming desperate.

Norwich and Sunderland join Leeds in Manuel Benson race

As has been well documented, Leeds have been working on a deal for Norwich City’s Jonathan Rowe ever since Summerville’s departure was confirmed.

However, little progress has been made by Leeds on Rowe, with the 21-year-old actually preferring a move to Marseille, who have seen two offers rejected.

With Rowe having been banished to the U21s, it is highly likely he will move on in the next two weeks, even if his destination is not at Elland Road.

And according to the Daily Express, Norwich have identified Leeds target Manuel Benson as the player they want to bring into replace him.

With Benson now a peripheral figure at Burnley, it is said Leeds, Norwich and Sunderland are all weighing up whether to make an offer before the end of the window.

It will be interesting to see who wins the race from Leeds or Norwich for the 27-year-old as it looks more and more likely neither will end up with Rowe.

Benson would be a solid addition for Leeds

Though some may question why Benson would be a good signing if he cannot get in at Burnley, the Clarets have comfortably the best side of wide options in the league.

When the ‘electric‘ Benson last played at this level, he was an absolute fan favourite at Burnley as he netted 11 goals in 33 appearances during their title winning campaign.

Benson would also add a profile to the squad that is currently lacking, in that he is a left-footed player who likes to play off the right.

Leeds are in need of someone who can come in and hit the ground running, and Benson is likely to fit that bill.
