TORONTO BLUE JAYS
SHOCKING Juan Soto criticizes Blue Jays’ approach to dealing with Aaron Judge..
In 2024, Aaron Judge is back to his former glory, to the point where organizations are starting to treat him like Barry Bonds.
Pitchers and managers in Major League Baseball determined early in the new millennium that walking Barry Bonds on purpose, no matter what, was the best approach to handle him at the height of his abilities. He was given first base 120 times in 2004. Sometimes, when you needed to defeat the Giants in a game, you just knew it was best.
The drama of intentional walks has diminished with time. It used to require pitchers to physically toss four balls in order to be granted a walk. You simply point at first now, and that’s it. But they still happen, particularly when you’re up against Aaron Judge.
In 2024, Judge is continuing to make the most out of his nine-year, $360 million contract with the New York Yankees, and he is on another tear. With an absurd OPS of 1.157, he leads the league in runs batted in, home runs, and batting average (.322). If the Yankees keep up their current winning streak, he will definitely win his second MVP in the near future.
Teams are doing all within their power to win games as the number of remaining games is decreasing. You know that Judge is one of the Yankees’ most potent weapons when you play against them. On Sunday, the Blue Jays gave him the Barry Bonds treatment because they knew it. Judge’s teammate was not amused by it.
Juan Soto is not pleased with Aaron Judge’s treatment.
Upon witnessing the Toronto Blue Jays intentionally walk Aaron Judge three times on Sunday, Juan Soto, an outfielder for the Yankees, expressed his anger to the media. He claimed he doesn’t like it when clubs pass him over and that he is doing his hardest to step up to the plate. Soto stated that he welcomes teams to take him on.
The issue is that Aaron Judge won’t actually have any opposition in 2024. He has reached the stage where he can handle his business regardless of the opponent. When Judge on the field, other teams are forced to weigh all of their alternatives due to his execution.
It’s likely that Judge and the Yankees will run into similar circumstance again. The Yankees will now have to determine how to handle it. Would they think of switching Judge and Juan Soto in the hierarchy? Would that mean walking Soto on purpose instead? If you ask me, it’s a really wonderful problem to have.
