Danny Rohl’s tenure as an ITV pundit ended yesterday with Portugal’s 3-0 victory over Turkey.

The Sheffield Wednesday coach has been in Germany for the past week, covering five games with people including Ian Wright, Karen Carney, and Gary Neville.

Ahead of England’s last group match against Slovenia on Tuesday, the German has returned to Yorkshire and shared his thoughts on the primary “issue” facing the national squad.

Last week, England defeated Serbia by a tight margin to begin their Euro campaign, although they played poorly in the second half.

Days later, they faced Denmark, and they carried over their subpar performance into a 1-1 draw.

This implies that the Three Lions’ spot in the knockout stages isn’t assured, and if they lose to Slovenia, they might have to make a humiliating exit.

Gareth Southgate’s team is playing terribly, and Rohl has now offered his explanation on why that might be.

The Owls coach stated yesterday in an interview with ITV, “My main concern is whether the players or the system are to blame for this. Or is there another reason for it? He mentioned yesterday that the players weren’t prepared for the intensity or the pressuring.

“Yeah, it’s such a problem. Then you can change the shape or the system, but you will not change the intensity just with the shape. I saw yesterday all the data after they took the lead, all the players are just 20 metres in front of their own goal. I think maybe this is the issue.”

Where does the issue lie with Gareth Southgate’s squad?

England have some of the best players in world football in the likes of Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Phil Foden, however it is only the former that has managed to impress at all so far this summer.

While playing Foden out wide and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the middle doesn’t seem to be working, that surely can’t be the sole reason for such a dismal excuse for ‘pressing’, their lack of movement and poor passing.

Choosing to only call up one injured left-back is certainly a huge issue, while giving Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer zero minutes in two matches is another.

It seems to be a mix of a number of problems that is causing England’s downfall, but Southgate is now the only man that can fix it and he needs to do it fast.
