Bruno Caboclo saved Brazil’s hopes at the Olympics by becoming the first player to record at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in an Olympic game since 1972. With the Brazilian men’s basketball team facing elimination in Paris, the former first-round draft pick of the Raptors turned in a historic performance on Friday, bringing back glimpses of what might have been in Toronto. Against a formidable Japanese team that also featured former Raptors forward Yuta Watanabe in the starting lineup, Caboclo scored 33 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as Brazil triumphed 102-84 and preserved hopes of making it to the quarterfinals.

The 28-year-old Caboclo shot 13 of 19 from the field, including 4 of 4 from three-point range, with remarkable efficiency. He became the first Olympian to have 30 points and 15 rebounds in a single game since Clifford Luyk of Spain did so in 1972, according to FIBA.

Masai Ujiri, the president of the Raptors, made the controversial decision to choose Caboclo 20th overall back in 2014. The Brazilian prospect was “two years away from being two years away” from being NBA ready, according to ESPN expert Fran Fraschilla.

That prediction turned out to be largely true.  Caboclo struggled to find his footing in the league. After four years spent mostly with the team’s developmental program, Caboclo had short stints with the Sacramento Kings, Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets before going overseas. He currently plays for Partizan in the Serbian league.

Brazil finished third in Group B after losing to Germany and France. Despite the 1-2 record, it’s not over just yet. The top two third-place teams after the opening round will also advance.
