BREAKING NEWS: Nico Williams’s most recent contract offer from Barcelona is more than reasonable.

Since Nico Williams of Athletic Club lit up Euro 2024 en route to Spain winning the trophy at the end of the competition, Barcelona has made Williams a clear transfer priority.

Star right winger Lamine Yamal has been vocal about bringing Williams to Catalunya after forming a devastating winger partnership with him for Spain, and, likewise, Barcelona have been very interested in recruiting another attacking standout from the Spanish national team in RB Leipzig star Dani Olmo.

But before Olmo, Barcelona have made Williams their focus. Despite strong interest from a PSG side desperate to recover from Kylian Mbappe’s free departure to Real Madrid, it’s been a one-team race with only Barca truly having a chance at Williams.

Well, technically, it’s a two-team race, because Williams is also very keen on staying with Athletic Club, where his brother Inaki Williams has stayed loyally for years.

Most Athletic Club players stay at the Basque-only club, as they are well-paid, have an untouchable connection with their fans, and do compete for European football every season.

So Nico Williams has a difficult decision to make, and despite their financial constraints due to years of mismanagement under a previous regime, Barcelona are making the decision even more difficult with a contract offer that slightly trumps Williams’ current solid earnings at Athletic Club.

Per a report from La Vanguardia’s Anais Marti Herrero, Barcelona have offered the 22-year-old a five-year contract worth a little over 7.5 million euros net per season with performanced-based incentives.

That’s more money than what Williams makes from Athletic Club right now, which is five million euros net per season.

It’s a reasonable offer to Williams, though, presumably, Athletic Club would be willing to offer him a raise of their own if he stays despite the heavy transfer interest from Barcelona, PSG, Chelsea, and Arsenal this summer.
