The Sacramento Kings made a major move late on Saturday night, agreeing to a sign-and-trade that will send six-time All-Star and California native DeMar DeRozan to Sacramento on a three-year, $74 million contract. DeRozan had spent the previous three seasons in Chicago, and now he will play alongside yet another rising star, Victor Wembanyama. As part of that sign-and-trade, Sacramento sent former Dallas Maverick Harrison Barnes to the San Antonio Spurs, who will suit up nicely with another rising young superstar, Victor Wembanyama. Barnes spent two and a half seasons in Dallas, including the first 49 games of Luka Doncic’s NBA career.

At the 2019 trade deadline, Barnes was traded from Dallas to Sacramento for Justin Jackson and Zach Randolph, who would later be waived. The trade was essentially a salary dump to avoid long-term debt because the Mavs also planned to acquire Kristaps Porzingis, who would require a new contract.

Barnes’ best years were spent in Dallas, when he played in 205 games and averaged 18.7 points per game. Since being traded away from the Mavs, he has never finished a season with more than 16.4 points per game. San Antonio is now hoping he can mesh nicely with their rebuild. To make the money work, they had to trade Devonte Graham to Charlotte. With Chris Paul, Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, Jeremy Sochan, and Victor Wembanyama set to start for the Spurs, as well as Stephon Castle and Keldon Johnson on the bench, they could surprise a few people this season and even challenge for a spot in the Play-In games.

Chicago received Chris Duarte and future second-round picks in exchange for DeRozan. DeRozan is a great mid-range scorer, but his presence in lineups with the ineffective Domantas Sabonis will make it difficult for the Kings to move up to the Western Conference.
